Thorne lies in the low, flat country north-east of Doncaster, in an area once dominated by marsh and fen. From above, the town centres on a small market place, with its streets spreading out over ground that barely rises above sea level. The Stainforth and Keadby Canal passes along its southern side, and the River Don is not far to the west.
The town is served by two railway stations, Thorne North and Thorne South, on separate lines, and the rail routes draw long straight lines across the map. To the east lie Thorne Moors, part of the Humberhead Peatlands, one of the largest areas of lowland raised bog in Britain.
