Tolentino Map Poster & Print
Tolentino lies in the valley of the Chienti river in the Marche, between the Apennine foothills and the Adriatic. On the map, the historic centre forms a compact, irregular knot of streets beside the river, still partly outlined by its old walls. Newer districts spread along the valley floor and up the surrounding slopes.
The town is best known for the Basilica of San Nicola, dedicated to the Augustinian friar Nicholas of Tolentino, whose shrine has drawn pilgrims for centuries. It also appears twice in European history. The Treaty of Tolentino between Napoleon and the Papal States was signed here in 1797. In 1815 the Battle of Tolentino ended in defeat for Joachim Murat.
A Tolentino map poster shows the whole town in precise black lines: the medieval streets, the curve of the Chienti, the bridges over it and the country roads climbing into the hills. It suits anyone with family ties to the Marche and pilgrims who have visited the basilica. It also suits anyone who loves Italian hill country and its small, many-layered towns.

The Chienti river
The river curves through the valley beside the town and gives the composition its main natural line. Several bridges cross it, including the medieval Ponte del Diavolo.
Valley and hills
Newer districts stretch along the valley floor. Country roads climb the surrounding slopes toward the farms and villages of the Marche countryside.
