Tolga lies in the Ziban, a group of oases west of Biskra, at the northern edge of the Algerian Sahara. On a map, the town is a cluster of streets surrounded by palm groves, and then the land opens into near-empty desert. The palm groves are the reason the town exists. Tolga is closely associated with Deglet Nour dates, a prized variety grown across the Ziban.
