Três Marias exists largely because of water. The town grew up alongside the Três Marias dam, built on the São Francisco River in the mid-twentieth century, which holds back one of the largest reservoirs in Brazil. On a map, the lake dominates everything: long flooded valleys reach out in fingers across the cerrado, and the town sits near the dam at its northern end.
The street plan reflects its origins as a planned settlement tied to a major infrastructure project. Blocks are laid out in a fairly regular pattern, with main avenues leading toward the river and the dam. Below the barrier, the São Francisco resumes its course north, a single river line leaving the enormous reservoir behind.
