Tullamore is the county town of Offaly, in the flat centre of Ireland. Its street plan is shaped by two waterways: the Tullamore River, which passes through the town, and the Grand Canal, which sweeps past the centre on its way from Dublin to the Shannon. Between them sits a compact core of Georgian streets, a central square and terraces of shops.
The canal made Tullamore a busy trading town in the early nineteenth century, and the old harbour still shows on the map as a widened stretch of water. The town is also known for whiskey, as Tullamore D.E.W. takes its name from here. In 1785 a hot-air balloon crash set fire to houses in the town, an episode often described as one of the first aviation disasters.

Tullamore's older streets form a tight, mostly regular core around its central square. On paper the short blocks and narrow plots give the middle of the poster a fine, detailed grain.
