Tumbes Map Poster & Print
Tumbes lies in the far north of Peru, close to the border with Ecuador, on the banks of the Tumbes River a short distance inland from the Pacific. From above, the city is a grid of blocks beside the river, with the waterway curving past its edge and the flat coastal plain around it divided into fields, channels and wetlands.
It was here, in the early sixteenth century, that Francisco Pizarro's expedition reached the edge of the Inca Empire, and Tumbes became the starting point of the Spanish conquest of Peru. Today the region is known for the mangrove forests of its delta, protected in a national sanctuary, and for warm beaches along the nearby coast.
A Tumbes map poster shows a city defined by water. The river gives the grid a curving edge, bridges link the two banks, and beyond the built-up area the map fades into the channels and estuaries of the coastal plain, a landscape unusual on Peru's mostly desert coast.

Plaza de Armas grid
The historic centre follows a regular grid around the main plaza, with straight streets that give the city its clear, orderly core.
Delta and mangroves
Toward the coast, the river spreads into channels and mangrove wetlands, drawn as fine, branching lines that contrast with the rectangular blocks inland.
