Irrigation canals
Water channels branch across the oasis in regular lines. They are the lifeline of the landscape and one of the most distinctive patterns on the map.

Tuomuwusitang Map Poster & Print
Tuomuwusitang lies in the oasis around Yarkand, known in Chinese as Shache, in the southwest of Xinjiang. The settlement belongs to a landscape built on irrigation. Water drawn from the Yarkand River feeds a fine network of canals, and villages, orchards and fields cluster wherever that water reaches.
On a map, the oasis looks strikingly ordered. Straight roads divide the farmland into long rectangles, small channels run alongside them, and houses line the roads in rows rather than gathering in dense centers. Beyond the cultivated land lies the desert, where the network of lines stops abruptly.
Yarkand was for centuries an important stop on the trade routes crossing the Tarim Basin, and the oasis around it has been farmed for a very long time. A Tuomuwusitang map poster shows the local pattern of this old agricultural region, with canals, lanes and fields drawn as a quiet, repeating grid.

Roadside settlement
Houses and farmsteads stand in long rows along the roads instead of forming a compact town center, which gives the poster an evenly spread, linear rhythm.
Oasis edge
Widen the frame and the cultivated grid gives way to empty desert. The sharp boundary between green land and sand becomes clear, even in black and white.
