Umm Qaşr lies at the far southern tip of Iraq, close to the Kuwaiti border, on a tidal waterway that leads out to the Persian Gulf. From above, the landscape is almost entirely flat: tidal flats, desert and water. The town sits beside the port, whose long straight berths and storage yards are the most striking forms on the map.
It is Iraq's main deepwater port and the country's principal gateway for imported goods and grain. The rest of Iraq's short coastline is shallow, which gives Umm Qaşr great strategic importance. It has been at the centre of events in several regional conflicts, including the opening days of the 2003 war.

The channel linking the port with the Persian Gulf crosses the frame as a broad band of water, with low mudflats and shoreline along its edges.
