The town is on the island's southern coast, and from above its centre is a compact grid of streets beside the water, with a port and a shoreline that curves along the bay. Catanduanes is often called the Land of the Howling Winds, because it lies directly in the path of many Pacific typhoons. The island is also known for abaca, the fibre crop grown on its slopes. Virac is its main gateway, with an airport and a seaport connecting it to the mainland of Luzon.
