West Lafayette sits on the west bank of the Wabash River in Indiana, facing the older city of Lafayette across the water. It is defined by Purdue University, whose campus covers much of the city's centre and whose students make up a large share of the population. Bridges link the two sides of the river, and State Street runs from the riverfront up through the heart of campus.

Academic buildings are arranged around quads and malls, with wide paths crossing between them, while residential streets form a more regular grid to the north and west. The river divides West Lafayette from Lafayette. Its wide, curving course and the bridges crossing it form the eastern edge of the city.
