Westerlo is in the Kempen region of Antwerp province, a low, sandy landscape of woods, heath and small rivers. The Grote Nete flows past the town and meanders gently through meadows. In the village of Tongerlo, part of the municipality, stands Tongerlo Abbey, a Norbertine community founded in the twelfth century. Its walled precinct, with courtyards, farm buildings and a surrounding moat, forms a distinctive rectangular island in the landscape. It is one of the most recognisable shapes in the area.
