Yerevan's centre follows a plan drawn by the architect Alexander Tamanyan in the 1920s. Its streets radiate from Republic Square, an oval plaza surrounded by buildings in pink and orange tuff, and a horseshoe-shaped Ring Park wraps around the core. Few capitals show their planning ideas so clearly from above.
To the west, the Hrazdan River runs through a deep gorge, its winding line separating the centre from outer districts. To the north, the Cascade climbs a hillside in a long staircase of terraces. The city traces its founding to the Erebuni fortress, built in 782 BC, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. On clear days, Mount Ararat dominates the southern horizon, visible from much of the city across the border in Turkey.

Hrazdan gorge
The river cuts a deep, winding gorge along the west side of the centre, a natural boundary crossed by several high bridges.
