Yingpan is in the mountain country of northwest Yunnan, a region of steep ridges and deep river valleys running roughly north to south. In landscapes like this, the map is shaped more by terrain than by planning: flat ground is scarce, so streets, houses and fields gather wherever the valley floor or a gentle slope allows.
From above, the town forms an elongated shape, following the line of its valley and the road that runs through it.
