River Zaan
The river runs north to south through the whole municipality, and nearly every town in Zaanstad lines up along its banks. It is the long central spine of the map.

Zaanstad Map Poster & Print
Zaanstad is a municipality just north-west of Amsterdam, formed in 1974 from a chain of towns along the river Zaan, including Zaandam, Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk, Wormerveer and Krommenie. It has no single centre in the usual sense. The map shows one long settlement strung along both banks of the river, with flat polder land and waterways on either side.
This was one of the earliest industrial regions in Europe. From the seventeenth century, hundreds of windmills along the Zaan sawed timber, pressed oil and ground spices, and shipbuilding flourished. Tsar Peter the Great came to Zaandam in 1697 to learn the trade. The open-air museum at Zaanse Schans, with its working mills and green wooden houses, keeps that landscape visible.
A Zaanstad map poster shows the region's typical pattern of villages built along dikes: narrow roads following the riverbanks, houses lined up along them, and the rectangular fields of drained polders beyond. Canals, railway lines and the North Sea Canal to the south add strong straight edges to a composition that otherwise flows in long ribbons.

Ribbon villages
Houses and streets follow the dikes in narrow, continuous strips, a classic Dutch settlement pattern that turns into fine parallel lines on the poster.
Polder geometry
Around the towns, ditches divide the drained land into long rectangular plots. This precise, ruled texture frames the winding river and its villages.

Zaanstad appeals to people who like maps that tell a story of work and water: mills, wharves, and the river that powered it all. It is also home to many who commute to Amsterdam and want their own town on the wall.
