Zhongduo is the seat of Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, in the far southeast of Chongqing. The town sits in the Wuling mountain region, where flat ground is scarce, so the built-up area stretches along valley floors and wraps around the base of steep slopes. On a map, the streets form long, narrow bands rather than a compact grid.
Youyang is home to large Tujia and Miao communities, and the county is known for its mountain scenery and cultural traditions. Roads and a railway reach the town through the hills, often by tunnel and bridge, which appear on the map as straight lines cutting through otherwise curving terrain.
