Amersfoort, in the province of Utrecht, has one of the best-preserved medieval centres in the Netherlands, and it is especially clear on a map. The old town is an oval enclosed by two rings of canals. The inner ring follows the line of the first city wall, and the outer ring follows the later fortifications. Around them, nineteenth- and twentieth-century districts spread out in all directions.
Two landmarks give the centre its character. The Koppelpoort is a combined land and water gate where the Eem leaves the old town, and the tall tower of Onze Lieve Vrouwe rises in the middle. That tower long served as the reference point for the Dutch national coordinate grid. Along the inner canal, the Muurhuizen are houses built into the remains of the first wall.
An Amersfoort map poster puts those concentric rings at the centre of the composition. Beyond them lie the railway junction, the curved streets of postwar neighbourhoods and the newer planned districts on the edge, such as Nieuwland and Vathorst. The contrast between the compact medieval oval and the looser modern city is the core of the image.
