Andernach lies on the left bank of the Rhine, where the valley widens between Koblenz and Bonn. On the map, the old town is clearly visible along the river: a compact core of narrow lanes, partly enclosed by the line of the medieval walls. From there, the newer districts spread west and north over flatter land, while the Rhine forms a wide, curved edge.
The town traces its origins to a Roman settlement, which makes it one of the oldest towns in Germany. It is also known for the Andernach Geyser on the Namedyer Werth peninsula, considered the highest cold-water geyser in the world. More recently, the town has become known as an edible city, where public green spaces are planted with vegetables and fruit.

Downstream, a long, narrow peninsula reaches into the Rhine. It is home to the cold-water geyser and is one of the most recognisable shapes on the map.
