Andīmeshk lies in northern Khuzestan, where the flat lowlands of south-west Iran give way to the foothills of the Zagros. From above, the town is a compact grid on level ground, with straight streets and long blocks, and ridges rise beyond it to the north. Dezful, the older neighbouring city, sits a short distance away across the Dez River.
Much of Andīmeshk's modern importance comes from the Trans-Iranian Railway, which leaves the plain here and begins its climb through the mountains. During the Second World War the line carried Allied supplies north, and the town became an important staging point. Upstream, the Dez Dam holds a large reservoir in the mountains, and the Karkheh Dam lies to the west.
An Andīmeshk map poster is a study in contrast between order and terrain. A regular town plan sits on one side and the first folds of the mountains on the other, with the railway and highways running between them.
