Atauro lies across the strait from Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, close enough to be seen from the city on a clear day. It is a mountainous island that rises steeply from the sea, with only a thin band of flatter land along parts of the coast. Villages such as Beloi and Vila sit on this edge, linked mostly by tracks and paths rather than a dense road network.
The waters around Atauro are known for their reef life. A 2016 survey by Conservation International recorded some of the highest average reef fish diversity measured anywhere in the world, and community-managed marine areas help protect it. During the Portuguese colonial period, the island was used as a place of exile and imprisonment.
An Atauro map poster shows the island at a scale where relief shapes everything. The interior is almost free of lines, the coast carries the few settlements and paths, and the surrounding reef and open strait give the composition generous space.
