Birmingham lies in Oakland County, about fifteen miles north of downtown Detroit. On a map it sits inside the square-mile grid that shapes much of southeast Michigan, with Maple Road and the mile roads running east to west. Woodward Avenue, the old route out of Detroit, comes up from the south and splits around the town centre, with Old Woodward carrying the downtown shops.
The Rouge River winds through the town from the northwest, and its narrow green corridor breaks up the straight lines of the residential streets. Shain Park, next to the city offices and library, gives the downtown a clear centre. Around it the blocks are short and closely built, which is why Birmingham is known as one of the more walkable centres in the Detroit area.
A Birmingham map poster shows how that small, dense core fades into curving residential streets and larger lots further out. The contrast is easy to read in black and white: a tight cluster of blocks at the centre, the broad line of Woodward, and the river's loose path through the neighbourhoods.

Rouge River corridor
The upper Rouge River runs through Birmingham as a thin, winding strip of green. It is the only line on the map that ignores the grid, and the curving streets nearby follow it.
Shain Park
