Bonny stands on Bonny Island in Rivers State, in the southern part of the Niger Delta, where the Bonny River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The map here is defined by water: wide river channels, tidal creeks and mangrove swamps wrap around the land, and the town occupies the firmer ground near the shore. For most travellers the island is reached by boat from Port Harcourt.
Bonny has a long history as a trading centre. The Kingdom of Bonny was one of the most important ports on the West African coast for centuries, and in the modern era the island has become central to Nigeria's energy industry, with an oil export terminal and the Nigeria LNG plant located here. These installations appear on the map as large, distinct footprints.

The town's streets sit against a maze of creeks and channels that break the island into irregular shapes, and the coastline opens to the Bight of Bonny. A network of narrow creeks winds through the surrounding swamp, drawing a dense, branching pattern around the island that contrasts with the straighter lines of the town's streets.
Industrial footprint
The oil terminal and the LNG plant occupy large areas of the island, visible as broad, regular shapes distinct from the smaller residential blocks of the old town.
