Bottrop lies in the northern Ruhr, between Oberhausen, Essen and Gladbeck. From above, the city is a patchwork: a compact centre, residential districts of different ages, large parks and woods, and the traces of the coal industry that built it. The Rhine–Herne Canal and the Emscher run along the southern side, drawing two long parallel lines across the bottom of the map.
Coal mining shaped Bottrop for more than a century. The Prosper-Haniel mine, which closed in 2018, was the last active hard-coal mine in Germany. The mining era left spoil heaps behind as artificial hills. One of them is topped by the Tetraeder, a steel viewing structure shaped like a pyramid that has become a symbol of the city. Bottrop is also the birthplace of the artist Josef Albers.
A Bottrop map poster reveals how much of the city is open space. Former mine sites, heaps and parks form broad areas between the neighbourhoods, while railways and motorways cut across in firm lines. In the north, around Kirchhellen, the land becomes rural and wooded, so the composition moves from dense to open across the sheet.
