Bückeburg, in the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony, was for centuries the residence of the counts and later princes of Schaumburg-Lippe. That history is still clear from above. The palace, Schloss Bückeburg, sits in its moat at the edge of the old town, with a large landscaped park stretching out beside it. The palace grounds take up space in the map comparable to the historic centre.
The old town is compact, organised along a main street with the Stadtkirche, one of the earliest large Protestant church buildings in Germany, close by. To the south, the wooded Harrl hill rises above the town and holds the princely mausoleum. Bückeburg is also known for its army aviation school and the Hubschraubermuseum, a museum devoted to helicopters.

The wooded Harrl hill rises south of the town. The princely mausoleum stands there, and the forest gives the map a calm, dark border.
