Cachoeira do Sul grew up beside the Jacuí River in central Rio Grande do Sul, and the river still defines its edge on the map. The town is built on a regular grid of blocks, a pattern typical of southern Brazilian towns. Long, straight avenues run back from the waterfront, and a central square marks the old core.
Beyond the built-up area, the land opens into the flat plains of the Jacuí valley, where rice has long been the main crop. The town calls itself the national capital of rice. From above, the fields look like broad, empty panels divided by channels and farm roads, a strong contrast with the dense rectangles of the centre.
