Casale Monferrato sits on the right bank of the Po, where the river leaves the Piedmont plain and the Monferrato hills begin to rise to the south. The map shows a dense historic core of narrow streets, a riverside edge crossed by a bridge, and newer districts filling in around the old centre in looser blocks.
For centuries, the town was the capital of the Marquisate of Montferrat, and the Palaeologus castle still stands near the old centre. The Romanesque cathedral of Sant'Evasio and a notable historic synagogue are part of its heritage. On paper, these appear as a few larger footprints within the fine grain of the medieval streets.
