Celle sits on the Aller river at the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony. Its old town is one of the most recognisable shapes in northern Germany: a small grid of streets enclosed by water and green space, with the castle and its park just to the west. Newer districts spread outward on all sides, but the core remains distinct.
The old town is known for its large ensemble of half-timbered houses, several hundred of them, many dating from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Celle Castle, a former residence of the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg, is a Renaissance and Baroque building surrounded by a moat. The French Garden to the south and the branches of the Aller around the centre add further curves and open space to the plan.
