Cornwall lies on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River in eastern Ontario, close to where Ontario, Quebec and New York State meet. The city is laid out on a largely regular grid of streets running back from the water. Across the whole map, the river forms a broad, unbroken southern edge.
Opposite the city lies Cornwall Island, part of the Mohawk territory of Akwesasne. The Seaway International Bridge links the shores on the way toward Massena. Upstream, the Moses-Saunders Power Dam spans the river. It was built during the St. Lawrence Seaway project of the 1950s, which reshaped this whole stretch of water and its shoreline.

The high crossing reaches Cornwall Island and continues to the American side. It draws a single line across the water that ties two countries together on paper.
