Coulommiers lies in the east of Seine-et-Marne, in the valley of the Grand Morin, about an hour from Paris. The river divides into several arms as it passes through town, and the historic centre sits among them, so from above the old streets appear wrapped in water. Around this core, newer neighbourhoods spread across the gentle slopes of the Brie plateau.
The town gave its name to Coulommiers cheese, a soft cow's-milk cheese close in style to Brie, and it remains a market centre for the farmland around it. Its heritage includes a former commandery of the Knights Templar and the remains of a seventeenth-century château set in a public park. Both appear on the map as open spaces among the streets.
A Coulommiers map poster makes the most of that setting. The river arms trace soft curves through the centre, bridges cross them at short intervals, and the old street pattern tightens where the channels meet. The former commandery of the Knights Templar stands on the edge of town in its own grounds, an open patch on the map that marks one of the oldest sites in Coulommiers.
