Deán Funes sits in the north of Córdoba province, where the last folds of the Sierras give way to flatter, drier country. From above, the town is a compact rectangle of blocks in a regular grid. A central plaza anchors the pattern, and the streets thin into rural tracks at every edge. Around the town, the land shows as fields, scrub and scattered farm roads that run on toward the horizon.
The town takes its name from Gregorio Funes, dean of Córdoba's cathedral and a figure of Argentina's independence period. It grew as a railway settlement, and the line that shaped its early life still cuts a firm stroke across the map. It divides the grid and sets the direction of the streets around the old station grounds. Today the town is the head town of the Ischilín department.

To the west and south the land rises toward the northern Sierras de Córdoba. Here the street pattern gives way to rural roads that wander off across open country.
