From above, Derbendîxan sits where the Sirwan River, also known as the Diyala, leaves a narrow gorge in the ridges of eastern Iraqi Kurdistan. The town's streets fill the lower ground between steep slopes. The contour of the land shapes the plan more than any grid does, so roads curve with the valley and stop where the hills get too steep.
The defining feature is the Darbandikhan Dam, built in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It holds back a long reservoir that spreads through the valleys upstream. On a map the lake reads as a pale, branching shape, its edges running into side valleys like fingers. Next to it the town looks compact, a cluster of blocks at the reservoir's southern end.

The border with Iran lies not far to the east. The surrounding hills show up as open ground broken by a few winding roads, so the town's own streets stand out even more clearly against the landscape.

Branching reservoir
The lake behind the dam doesn't form a simple oval. It follows the drowned valleys, so its outline spreads into irregular arms that make a striking pale shape against the surrounding land.
Valley-bound streets
Steep ground limits where the town can grow. Its roads bend along the slopes and the riverbanks, which gives the plan an organic, contour-led look instead of a planned grid.
