Esher lies in Surrey on the southwestern edge of London, and from above it reads less as a dense town than as residential streets set among open land. Large commons and woodland cover much of the ground to the south, and the A3 bypass cuts across in a broad sweep. The High Street runs through the older centre, where the main roads meet.
Sandown Park racecourse fills a large site beside the town centre, and its oval track is one of the most recognisable shapes on the map. To the south, Claremont Landscape Garden, now cared for by the National Trust, preserves an early eighteenth-century garden with a lake and an amphitheatre cut into the turf.
