Grande-Synthe lies just west of Dunkirk, on the flat maritime plain of French Flanders. For centuries it was a small farming commune. Its population rose sharply in the 1960s and 1970s, when steelmaking and the growth of the port brought in thousands of workers. The street plan still reflects that period, with broad roads, large housing blocks and generous open land between districts.
From above, the town reads as a patchwork of separate pieces, not one continuous grid. Residential quarters curl around cul-de-sacs and loop roads, and major routes cut straight lines toward the coast. To the north, industrial zones and docks form large geometric shapes. Grande-Synthe is also known for its environmental policies, and in 2010 it was named France's capital of biodiversity. The Puythouck lake and the park around it form a large, irregular shape on the edge of town.
