Jocotepec lies at the western tip of Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest freshwater lake, in the state of Jalisco. On the map the town occupies the strip of land between the shoreline and the hills that frame the valley. Its streets form a traditional grid around a central plaza, sloping gently down toward the lake edge.
The lake is the dominant feature of any map of the area. Its broad surface stretches away to the east, and the shore near Jocotepec is lined with reeds, fields and a lakeside promenade. The road along the northern shore links Jocotepec with Ajijic and Chapala, towns popular with visitors and with retirees from the United States and Canada.
