Khān Yūnis is the principal city of the southern Gaza Strip, lying a short distance inland from the Mediterranean shore. Its map shows a close-knit centre where older streets gather, surrounded by broader blocks and, toward the west, a camp and neighbourhoods reaching out to the sandy coastal strip. Farmland and greenhouses have traditionally ringed the outskirts of the city.
The city grew around a fortified caravanserai built in the late fourteenth century under the Mamluks, a stop on the route between Egypt and Syria. Its remains have long marked the heart of the town beside the main market. The place has seen repeated destruction in recent years, and any map of it is also a record of streets as they were drawn.
A Khān Yūnis map poster carries that meaning quietly. It shows the plan as mapped, the tight centre, the roads leading to the coast and to Rafah in the south, without commentary. Several roads run west from the centre toward the coast, crossing the camp area and the sandy strip near the shore. They give the composition a clear east–west direction.
Coastal edge
In a wider frame the Mediterranean forms a straight, clean boundary on the western side, contrasting with the dense street pattern inland and anchoring the whole layout.
