Luanshya lies in the south of Zambia's Copperbelt, on gently rolling plateau country threaded by the Luanshya River. From above, the town is a collection of distinct parts rather than one continuous grid: a central business district, planned residential townships with curving streets, and the large footprints of mine shafts, plants and tailings areas. Bush and farmland fill the spaces in between.
It is one of the oldest mining towns in the Copperbelt. According to a well-known story, the copper deposit here was identified in 1902 when a prospector shot a roan antelope and noticed copper ore beneath it, giving the Roan Antelope mine its name. The town grew up around that mine in the 1920s and 1930s.
A Luanshya map poster traces the layered story of a company town: the main roads, the mine areas in broad strokes, and the residential neighbourhoods with their curving crescents and open spaces. In black and white, the different textures of industry, housing and open land become clear and legible.

Residential areas were laid out with curved streets, crescents and open spaces typical of mid-century company towns. From above they create an orderly but gentle pattern.
Luanshya River
The small river winds through the area, with vegetation along its banks. It softens the poster's industrial lines and adds a natural curve to the composition.
