Maranguape lies just south-west of Fortaleza, where the flat land of coastal Ceará runs up against a steep, forested ridge. From above, the town is shaped by that edge. Streets cluster at the base of the Serra de Maranguape and spread east across the lowland, where they meet the growing suburbs of the metropolitan area.
Much of Ceará's interior is dry, but the serra catches rain and stays green, and for generations it has been a place for small farms, streams and weekend escapes from the capital. Maranguape is also known as the birthplace of the comedian Chico Anysio, one of Brazil's best-loved television performers.
A Maranguape map poster shows a clear meeting of hills and grid. On one side of the sheet the contour of the serra pushes the streets aside and leaves broad blank areas of slope. On the other side the town's blocks stretch into the plain in a regular pattern. The line between them is the defining feature of the place.
