Seen from above, Matinhos is mostly a single long edge. Streets run parallel to the Atlantic in narrow bands, and short cross streets drop down to the sand at regular intervals. Behind them the built-up area thins quickly, giving way to forested slopes that climb toward the Serra do Mar. On a map it looks like a town drawn along a ruler, with the ocean setting the direction of every block.
Matinhos sits on the short coastline of Paraná, one of the smallest stretches of seafront of any Brazilian state. The Caiobá district, part of the municipality, has long been a summer destination for families from Curitiba, who come down from the plateau when the weather turns hot. Out of season the town is quieter, and the rhythm of the grid along the beach becomes the thing you notice most.
A Matinhos map poster shows that tension between coast and mountain very clearly. The white of the sea fills one side of the frame, the fine street pattern follows the shoreline, and the higher ground inland appears as open, lightly marked space. Small headlands break the beach into separate curves, and each one changes the angle of the streets behind it, so the town never quite repeats itself.
