Montichiari sits on the open plain between Brescia and Lake Garda, where the land is flat enough that many roads seem to run straight to the horizon. The river Chiese crosses the town from north to south, and a line of low hills rises beside the centre. That raised edge shows clearly in the street pattern, where lanes bend around the slope instead of running straight.
On one of those hills stands Castello Bonoris, a castle rebuilt in the nineteenth century on medieval foundations. Nearby is the Romanesque church of San Pancrazio. Below them the historic centre is a compact knot of streets. Newer districts spread out in regular blocks toward farmland, the exhibition grounds and the airport that serves Brescia.

Castello Bonoris and the church of San Pancrazio sit on the low hills beside the centre. There the streets start to curve and tighten, in contrast with the straight roads of the plain.
Airport runways
The airport serving Brescia lies just outside town. Its long, perfectly straight runways make a strong graphic counterpoint to the river and the small blocks of the old centre.
