Pomona sits at the eastern edge of Los Angeles County, in the valley that bears its name, with the San Gabriel Mountains rising to the north. Its streets follow the orderly grid common across the region, with long straight avenues interrupted by rail lines and by the freeways that cross the city, including Interstate 10 and State Route 60.
The city was named after the Roman goddess of fruit, a nod to the citrus orchards that once covered the valley. Today it is home to Cal Poly Pomona, whose campus spreads across the hills on the western side of town, and to the Fairplex, the grounds of the Los Angeles County Fair. The historic downtown keeps a cluster of older buildings along its main streets.
A Pomona map poster shows a classic Southern California plan with some welcome disruptions. The grid is cut diagonally by rail tracks, freeway interchanges add sweeping curves, and the Cal Poly campus appears as a looser pattern of roads on the western slopes. In the north of the city, the oval track of the fairgrounds is one of the map's most recognisable shapes.
