Quibdó is the capital of Chocó, in Colombia's Pacific lowlands, and it grew along the eastern bank of the Atrato, one of the country's great navigable rivers. The river is the city's front: the waterfront promenade and the cathedral face it directly. On a map the Atrato forms a broad, curving band along the western edge of town.
The city spreads inland from the river. Blocks near the centre are fairly regular, while neighbourhoods further out are less so, and small streams cross them on their way to the Atrato. Beyond the built-up area the map quickly gives way to dense tropical forest. Quibdó is surrounded by one of the rainiest landscapes anywhere, and rivers are still important routes.
Quibdó is a centre of Afro-Colombian culture. Its San Pacho festival, held each year in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi, is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. A Quibdó map poster captures a river city of the Pacific rainforest, drawn with the water at its heart.
