Rhyl is shaped by the Irish Sea. Its northern edge is one long, almost perfectly straight line of promenade and sea wall, running east to west along the North Wales coast. The streets behind it form a fairly regular Victorian grid, with terraces running inland from the seafront. It's the kind of town that makes sense at a glance from above: a firm line of coast and rows of houses lined up behind it.
At the western end, the River Clwyd reaches the sea through a narrow mouth at Foryd Harbour, and the Pont y Ddraig footbridge crosses it there. Nearby, the Marine Lake forms a neat oval of water just inside the town. Inland, the flat reclaimed land of the Clwyd valley opens out, and the streets give way to fields and drainage lines.

The town grew as a Victorian resort once the railway reached the coast, and the station still sits at the heart of the street plan, linking the seafront with the rest of the town.

At the western end, the River Clwyd meets the sea in a narrow harbour, crossed by the Pont y Ddraig bridge, and the channel adds a clean diagonal to the composition.
Marine Lake
The oval Marine Lake lies just inside the coast near the river mouth, and its smooth outline stands out against the angular street grid around it.
