Rio Formoso lies on the southern coast of Pernambuco, a short distance inland from the Atlantic, where the river of the same name widens into a winding estuary. On a map the town sits on higher ground near the water, with streets arranged along the slope and roads leading toward the coastal towns and the highways that connect the region with Recife.
The estuary is the dominant feature: broad channels, sandbanks and mangrove fringes spread through the lower part of the municipality, drawn as intricate, branching shapes.
