São Vicente occupies the western part of São Vicente Island, which it shares with Santos, together with a large area on the mainland across the channel. On a map the island section is framed by water: open beaches facing the Atlantic, the sheltered São Vicente Bay, and narrow estuaries winding through mangroves. Dense streets fill the flat land between the hills and the shore.
Founded in 1532 by Martim Afonso de Sousa, São Vicente was the first Portuguese town established in Brazil. The Ponte Pênsil, a suspension bridge opened in 1914, links the island with the mainland and remains one of the city's best-known structures. Beaches such as Gonzaguinha and Itararé line the shore, and the small Porchat Island sits just off the coast.
