Schlüchtern sits in the upper Kinzig valley in eastern Hesse, where the Vogelsberg, the Spessart and the Rhön come close to one another. From above, the town takes the shape of its valley: a compact centre on the valley floor, residential streets climbing the lower slopes, and forest pressing in wherever the ground gets steep.
The town grew up around a Benedictine monastery founded in the early Middle Ages, and the former abbey buildings still anchor the historic core. On a map this shows as a tight knot of irregular lanes, clearly older than the looser streets that spread out from it. The river, the railway and the main roads all follow the valley, running roughly side by side.

Three uplands meet
Wooded slopes of the Vogelsberg, Spessart and Rhön foothills frame the town, so the edges of the poster fade into open land crossed by small winding country roads.
