Somerset West lies on the eastern side of the Cape Town metropolitan area, where the flat land around False Bay meets the rising slopes of the Helderberg and the Hottentots-Holland Mountains. On a map the suburbs fan out below the mountains in curving residential streets, the N2 highway cuts across the lower ground, and the seafront of neighbouring Strand lies to the south.
Founded in 1822 and now part of the City of Cape Town, the town grew among farmland and wine estates. The best known is Vergelegen, established in 1700 by the Cape governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel and still producing wine today. The Helderberg Nature Reserve protects part of the mountain slope directly above the town.
