Tacuarembó is the capital of Uruguay's largest department, set in the rolling ranching country of the north. On a map the city follows a precise grid of square blocks, broken by the curving course of a small stream, a few diagonal routes and a scattering of plazas. Around it the land opens into wide pastures and low hills, with roads heading out across the cuchillas toward Rivera and Montevideo.
The city is closely tied to gaucho tradition. Each year it hosts the Patria Gaucha festival, which brings riders, musicians and horsemen from across the country and the region. Tacuarembó is also one of the places that claim to be the birthplace of the tango singer Carlos Gardel. Local residents take the debate seriously, and it still draws visitors to the area.
