Talcahuano occupies the Tumbes peninsula and the low ground that ties it to the mainland, on the southern shore of the Bay of Concepción. On a map the city is defined by water on nearly every side: the bay to the north and east, San Vicente Bay to the west, and the hills of the peninsula rising above a narrow strip of flat land.
The city has long been one of Chile's main naval and fishing ports, and one of the Chilean Navy's most important bases is located here. Moored at the base is the Huáscar, a nineteenth-century ironclad now kept as a museum ship. In 2010 a major earthquake and tsunami struck the waterfront hard, and much of the harbour district was rebuilt afterwards.
A Talcahuano map poster shows how tightly the urban fabric is shaped by the coast. Docks and breakwaters extend into the water in straight, deliberate lines, while streets on the hills bend and fork to follow the contours. Two bays
The Bay of Concepción and San Vicente Bay lie on either side of the city, so the built-up area appears on the map as a narrow neck of land between two expanses of water.
Harbour works
Piers, dry docks and breakwaters of the naval base and the fishing port form hard geometric edges along the shoreline, in contrast to the irregular hillside streets behind them.
