Uberaba spreads across the gently rolling uplands of western Minas Gerais, and its streets bend to follow the land. The centre sits in a shallow valley, where older blocks form a compact grid around churches and squares. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward over the surrounding ridges in rings of residential streets cut by wide avenues, so the city's outline looks irregular and lobed from above.
In Brazil the city is best known for zebu cattle. Uberaba is a leading centre of zebu breeding, and its annual ExpoZebu fair draws breeders from across the country. On the map, the surrounding pasture and cropland form a quiet ring around the dense urban core. Highways cross it, leading toward Uberlândia, São Paulo and the rest of the interior.
Just outside town is the district of Peirópolis, where dinosaur fossils have been dug up for decades and are shown in a local museum. Some of the main avenues follow valley floors where streams once ran. This gives the road network long, curving lines that trace the shape of the land underneath.
Outer neighbourhoods
Beyond the centre, residential districts spread over the ridges in patches of grid set at different angles. Each was laid out as the city grew in a new direction.
