Verden an der Aller lies in Lower Saxony, on the River Aller a short distance before it flows into the Weser. The historic centre is compact and slightly elongated, running from the cathedral quarter at one end toward the old market town at the other. River arms and floodplain meadows wrap around the east and south, giving the map a soft green frame.
Verden's cathedral, a Gothic hall church, has been the town's landmark for centuries, and its presence shapes the southern end of the old town. The place also carries an older and darker memory: the massacre of Saxons ordered by Charlemagne in 782 is associated with Verden. Today the town is known as a centre of horse breeding and equestrian sport.

Just beyond town, the Aller joins the Weser. Where the frame is wide enough, the meeting of the two rivers adds a strong line to the composition.
