Vertientes sits on the broad, level plains of Camagüey province in central Cuba, southwest of the provincial capital. From above the town reads as a tight grid of short blocks, with roads leaving it in straight lines across farmland. There are no hills to bend the streets and no coastline in the frame, so the map is all about order: rectangles, crossings and the long lines of rural routes.
Sugar cane has long shaped this part of Camagüey, and towns across the plain grew up around mills, rail spurs and the fields that surrounded them.
